Avoiding Amazon Account Suspension: A Seller's Risk Checklist

For most sellers, the Amazon account is the business. A suspension doesn't slow you down - it stops you. The good news: the vast majority of suspensions are predictable and preventable if you watch the right signals.

Know your Account Health dashboard

Three metrics carry the most suspension risk. Check them weekly:

  • Order Defect Rate (ODR) - keep it under 1%. Driven by negative feedback, A-to-z claims, and chargebacks.
  • Late Shipment Rate - under 4%. Mostly a problem for FBM/self-fulfilled sellers.
  • Valid Tracking Rate - keep tracking accurate and uploaded.

For FBA sellers, also watch policy compliance notifications — they're the silent killer.

The three suspension triggers to design against

  • Performance - the metrics above slipping past threshold
  • Policy violations - restricted products, IP complaints, review manipulation, multiple-account rules
  • Authenticity / inauthentic complaints - a customer or brand alleges your product is fake or used. This is where invoices save you.

Build a paper trail before you need it

The single most important defense: keep supplier invoices for every product, showing you bought genuine stock in commercial quantities from a verifiable supplier. When an inauthentic complaint hits, Amazon asks for invoices within days. Sellers who have them clean and ready get reinstated fast; sellers scrambling to find them lose weeks.

  • Store invoices by ASIN/SKU
  • Make sure supplier name, address, and your business details match Seller Central
  • Keep them for at least 365 days

Protect against the avoidable

  • Don't manipulate reviews - incentivized reviews and "review groups" are the fastest route to a permanent ban
  • One account unless authorized - operating multiple accounts without permission is a hard violation
  • Vet listings for IP - don't piggyback on brands you're not authorized to sell
  • Respond to every notification within the stated window, even minor ones

If you do get suspended: the first 24 hours

Don't panic-appeal. A weak appeal can burn your best shot.

  1. Read the exact reason Amazon cites - appeal that, not what you assume
  2. Write a Plan of Action (POA) with three parts: the root cause, the immediate fix, and the systemic change that prevents recurrence
  3. Be specific and unemotional - Amazon wants evidence and process, not apologies
  4. Attach proof - invoices, corrected listings, screenshots

The takeaway

Suspension prevention is boring on purpose: watch three health metrics, keep invoices ready, never touch reviews, and answer every notice. Treat account health as a weekly habit, not a fire drill — because the cheapest suspension to handle is the one that never happens.
